Climate

Though generally experiencing a mild and temperate climate, the temperature in the parks drops the higher you go - approximately by 6.5°C for every 1,000m you climb. Average temperatures remain fairly consistent throughout the years, while evenings and early mornings can feel cool. Taking warm clothing along on early morning game drives is recommended. The dry season stretches from June to September and the wet season is split into two parts: the ‘long rains’ from March to May, while a period of ‘short rains’ is experienced in October and November.

Bird Watching

As well as the famous mammals that roam the parks, they are also home to a spectacular array of birdlife. Flamingos in particular are drawn to the mineral-filled waters of Lake Manyara, as well as a number of other waterbirds. In Tarangire, one of Tanzania's finest birding destinations, lucky visitors may spot oryx, generuk and mongoose.

Tree-Climbing Lions

One of the main reasons that Lake Manyara National Park is so popular with visitors is its famed population of tree-climbing lions. Prepare to be awed as these stunning cats (often weighing up to 400 pounds!) climb up onto the branches of the acacia trees, ready to enjoy a blissful nap and cool breeze. Of course, it also gives these predators a great vantage point from which to observe their prey.

Striking Scenery

Lake Manyara National Park showcases some of the most dramatic scenery in Tanzania, with the Great Rift Valley escarpment descending 550 metres to the wildlife-filled lake.
