A Remarkable Rwandan Adventure

I was introduced to the wildlife and history of Rwanda in the most amazing way and could not recommend it enough.

Having discovered the captivating beauty and incredible sights of Rwanda on a once-in-a-lifetime experience, our Head of Chairman's Club, Jonathan Bellamy was entranced by the charm of this fascinating country. With adventures around every corner, you can delve into Jonathan's journey and must-do's of this truly amazing destination.

Escape to Nyungwe Forest National Park

For serious bucket-list-ticking adventures in Rwanda, One&Only Nyungwe House blends seamlessly into the landscape of the Nyungwe Forest National Park. With each aspect celebrating Rwanda's heritage, from the indigenous Rwandan artwork throughout, to the infinity pool overlooking the lush valley and daily ceremonies in the Tea Lounge, this stunning resort offers remarkable natural and cultural experiences.

I would highly recommend doing tea tasting - picking tea leaves with the local people and tasting what you've picked with the local tea expert, learning the nuances of each flavour.

The surrounding landscape is home to a thriving tea plantation and an ancient rainforest which boasts some of Rwanda's most incredible wildlife. Spend time exploring the picturesque tea plantation, learning the secrets of African tea with the experts at the Tea Lounge on a unique Secrets Of African Tea experience. Meet friendly local people and assist them in their wonderful community work, learning more about their crafts, customs and cuisine and immersing yourself in the local culture.
Chimpanzee trekking is another main reason for many guests' visit to One&Only Nyungwe House, joining expert trackers deep into the forest, learning about the incredible native animals and spotting them in their natural habitat. Take a walk on the wild side and go on a guided excursion to spot wild and playful chimpanzees, colobus monkeys (the only place in Africa!), and cheeky L'Hoest's monkeys as they swing through the trees. The local environment also provides plenty of fun with birdwatching, cycling, archery and imigongo painting, along with the opportunity to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime canopy walk.

Make the most of your surroundings and get involved with some of the incredible activities - from lunch in the hotel's vegetable garden to exploring the treetops on a canopy walk. I highly recommend going in June or July, as the canopy-walk offers the best views of the beautiful orchids as you walk

Discover Volcanoes National Park

The perfect pairing with One&Only Nyungwe House, One&Only Gorilla's Nest invites you to discover the delights of Rwanda's famed Volcanoes National Park. While the array of activities available from the includes climbing volcanoes and meeting local people, the main allure is easily the park's native residents. This densely forested area is home to around 1000 majestic mountain gorillas - an elusive and endangered species with which humans share around 98% of their DNA and is only found in two places on the planet.

An absolute must-visit is The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund - an incredible science and education campus which help protect the wild mountain gorillas!

After a private evening showing of the iconic 'Gorillas in the Mist', head out early the next morning with an expert local tracker in search of a gorilla family on a truly a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience through the Volcanos National Park and follow in the footsteps of golden monkeys for a rare sighting. Discover the heart of Rwanda as you trek through the misty bamboo forest, hike up dormant volcanos or immerse yourself in a local village.

Back at the lodge, you can unwind in your luxury suite, dine on authentic local flavours, or tap into the energy of Rwanda with unique cultural experiences - from local crafts and spear throwing to immersing yourself in the local culture as you meet the people of the villages nearby. After encountering primates amid the bamboo jungle or hiking up dormant volcanoes, where better to unwind than the One&Only Spa? Indulge in sumptuous African-inspired treatments, bathe in the soothing sounds of crystal singing bowls or take a revitalising swim in the outdoor pool surrounded by a verdant forest.

You absolutely cannot miss dinner at the Jack Hanna Cottage - located within the hotel, Jack's beautiful home has been completely refurbished. Don't miss a unique opportunity to experience a slice of history and enjoy a beautiful meal overlooking the picture-perfect gardens!

For something extra special, why not extend your trip and spend some time at One&Only Cape Town? The perfect combination to see the city, One&Only Cape Town features iconic views of Table Mountain from almost any location and offers the perfect base from which to explore the Cape's diverse range of activities and sights.
