Gibbs Farm lies on the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater and on Tanzania’s popular northern safari circuit. It’s no wonder that the lodge has been described as a ‘sanctuary for the senses’, when you wake up to the sound of bird song and the smell of fresh bread comes wafting across from the farm’s own bakery. Savour the Arabica coffee made with beans grown on the farm and try your hand at capturing the colours of the gardens with a lesson from the artist-in-residence.
There is a multitude of activities and experiences available from this enchanting cluster of cottages - including safaris into the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation area and to Lake Manyara National Park. Closer to home, you can get involved in an array of activities on the farm - from picking vegetables with the chef, to milking the resident cows. Most guests opt for one of the many walking trails through the farm or, if you're feeling energetic, a climb up to the striking crater rim. At the end of the day, join the naturalists around the campfire and learn more about the legends and folklore of the area.
Property Location
An array of activities allow you to make the most of the incredible area. Meet a local family with a visit to Thoma village, gaining a greater understanding of the Iraqw culture, before traditional healers share stories about their culture, tribal folklore and stories from the Maasai. In addition, the farm's established artist-in-residence programme allows you to watch and learn from some of East Africa’s most talented artists, observing how the landscapes and people of Africa provide inspiration to their work.
Full day safaris can be arranged from Gibbs Farm into the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, where you can enjoy an unforgettable picnic lunch surrounded by wildlife. You can also explore Lake Manyara National Park, home to elephant, giraffe and the elusive leopard. The big draw card here is the prolific birdlife, with the lake attracting some 380 species.
Children of all ages are welcome at Gibbs Farm and the two-bedroom cottages are ideal for families, with a central lounge for additional space. Children can fully immerse themselves in farm life and assist with milking the cows and picking vegetables. Visits can be arranged to the local primary school and, through Gibb’s Farm extensive ‘giving back’ philosophy, families can consider being part of their Donate a Desk project.
The cottages at Gibbs Farm lend themselves to romance with indoor and outdoor showers, private verandahs and cosy log fires for those cooler evenings. What's more, the history of Gibbs Farm is founded on romance. James Gibb, who the farm is named after, married his wife here and planted the flowering tree outside Wedding House Cottage to mark the occasion. Interwoven with East African traditions, weddings and renewal of vows can be arranged in the flower-filled gardens.
Using the ancient healing therapies of the Maasai, Gibbs Farm can provide private massages in the privacy of your cottage. The Olkari Clay Paint treatment uses red clay to remove impurities from the skin, whilst the Arabica coffee scrub will fill the room with delicious aromas.

Higher temperatures are felt during September to April, and lower from May to August, although the difference throughout the year is not great. Precipitation around the crater adds up to around 1,000 mm per year, and is higher than in lower, more arid surrounding areas. The figures in the grid below are averages.

The volcanic peaks and deep calderas of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area provide a dramatic landscape, the central feature of which, of course, is the Ngorongoro Crater. Formed some three million years ago by a collapsed volcano, the crater is 610 metres deep and spreads over 260 square kilometres. The forested slopes of the crater form a striking natural bowl.
It was at Olduvai Gorge that Mary Leakey unearthed the remains of a hominoid, believed to date back 1.8 million years. Further excavations have led to the discovery of footprints over 3.7 million years old. This fascinating part of Tanzania is still actively explored by anthropologists and archaeologists, and can easily be visited from the Ngorongoro Crater Area.
The rich eco-systems of the Ngorongoro Crater attract a profusion of wildlife. As you descend the walls of the crater and traverse the crater floor on your safari, you may be fortunate enough to see lion, cheetah, black and white rhinoceros, elephant, warthog and zebra. One of the natural features of the Ngorongoro crater is its soda lakes and natural springs that attract many bird species - including flamingo.
One of the best ways to appreciate the dramatic landscapes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is on foot. An ancient Maasai cattle trail leads you through the forests to ascend the Olmoti Volcano. Alternatively, you can explore the soda lake of the Empakaai Crater which attracts pink flamingos.
