Luxury Holidays At Tswalu Kalahari

With over 100,000 hectares, Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest private game reserve. Here, in this malaria-free wilderness, the focus is on flexibility and privacy, outstanding game-viewing, gourmet cuisine and indulgent spa treatments. The uniqueness of the safari experience begins with a flexible itinerary, which allows guests to dictate their own programme of activities, including games-drives, bush walks and horse-riding safaris, and tailor their Tswalu safaris to include whatever interactive experience appeals to them - bonding with meerkats before they go foraging, spending the morning tracking the Desert Black Rhino or experiencing the magic of star-gazing and the thrill of sleeping under the night sky.

The main house features a heated outdoor swimming pool, the Tswalu Kalahari Spa and Gym, a walk-in wine cellar, a mezzanine library with a satellite television and a small gift shop, while indulgent boma feasts and bush dinners, sundowners, wine-tastings and dune picnics are enjoyed against the Kalahari backdrop. Children are made very welcome at Tswalu and the reserve offers activities specially designed to occupy them while their mums and dads relax. Tswalu Kalahari believes that everyone can be part of its conservation vision.

Luxury Family Holidays

With no malaria in this part of the Kalahari, Tswalu is a great family destination. At The Motse, there are two specially designed Family Suites that will easily accommodate large families or families with older children, while both properties offer an ideal environment for leisure, with pools located close to the main public areas. Upon arrival, every child is welcomed with a backpack full of guides and tools and an opportunity to chat with the hospitality staff about what they would like to see and do. Tswalu's Junior Ranger programme offers activities, including archery, spoor identification and casting and tracking on foot. The hugely popular bush walks are educational and adults are welcome too.

Safari

Activities centre around the guests' preferences and bush walks, 4x4 safaris, star-gazing, sleeping beneath the stars, photography and walks to archaeological sites can all be arranged. During the winter (June to August), the grasses and bushes dry out, so there are more opportunities to see smaller mammals and the shyer nocturnal creatures, such as the aardvark, aardwolf and pangolin, emerge in daylight. Many of the antelopes calf in the early summer (November to March) and signs of new life abound. Migrant birds arrive, such as cuckoos and Lanner Falcons, making bird-watching particularly exciting.

Romance

Sleep beneath infinite skies ablaze with a trillion diamond stars at Tswalu's sleep-out deck, known as Malori. Translating to 'dreamer', this is the ultimate location for romance in this vast African wilderness. Set apart from the two main camps, the accommodation comprises a cushioned seating area and fire-pit, a raised platform with table and chairs, as well as a sleeping area with a thatched roof, open to views all around. Imagine dinner and vintage wine, a telescope for starry-eyed star-gazing and a sumptuous bed, the sounds of the bush all around.

Spa Breaks

A place of peace and tranquillity, the award-winning Tswalu Kalahari Spa features reed ceilings, dry-stone walls and wooden frames and doors; colours are cool and neutral throughout, providing a soothing respite from the Kalahari sun. The spa boasts a welcoming lounge, two beautiful therapy suites with en-suite sensation showers featuring overhead colour therapy lights and a private garden complete with a labyrinth, outdoor treatment areas and a yoga tsala. Treatments and authentic signature experiences are inspired by the endless blue skies and unique vegetation of the Green Kalahari.

Climate

Spring (September and October) sees warm days and cooler nights – flowers bloom, trees blossom and inquisitive meerkats peek out of dens to feel the sun’s rays. Summer (November to March) means hot days and mild evenings, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms turning the desert into a verdant green paradise – a time to spot migrant birds and new-borns, like antelope calves and jackal pups. Autumn (April and May) brings mild days and cool evenings, a time when the region’s savannah grasses are at their greenest. This is the antelope mating season, and when hibernating animals stock up for winter. Winter days (June to August) can be pleasantly warm, whilst colder nights bring frost. Winter is a good time to spot smaller creatures like aardvark, pangolin and aardwolf, and to sit beneath the Kalahari’s star-studded skies.

Wildlife

Imagine typical Kalahari scenes of springbok and Kudu bull, silhouetted against the crimson-red sand. Spot the elusive eland, a horned mammal and the symbol of the original Bushmen, alongside splendid, Black-Maned lions roaming the savannahs, and White rhino chomping grass. Track the highly-endangered Desert Black rhino, look out for breeding herds of Roan and Sable antelope, encounter the jumpy Hartmann’s Mountain zebra, and glimpse the slender, long-legged cheetah basking in the sunshine. Embark on a thrilling night walk through the bush, spotting meerkats, aadvarks, pangolin, pardwolf, Bat-Eared Foxes, African Wild cats, and more!

Wildlife
Family

Family adventures at Tswalu Kalahari teach children about our precious planet and the environment, as well as the Kalahari people, wildlife and the importance of conservation in this treasured desert. Children can join Mum and Dad on a private game drive, or other young guests on a bush walk, learning how to track and examine burrows, tucking into delicious picnics along the way. They are also welcome on horse safaris, the saddle a perfect viewpoint from which to spot animals on grassy plains, just as early explorers would have done centuries ago. A full junior programme covers every age range, offering the exciting chance to graduate as a mini ranger by the end of their stay!
