Luxury Holidays At Quinta da Casa Branca

The British ancestors of Quinta da Casa Branca’s owners, the Leacock family, first used this estate to grow vines and banana trees, and later, the family went on to be one of Madeira's largest producers of wine until 1925. With such a beautiful location, it is perhaps not a surprise that this estate’s destiny was to become home to one of Madeira’s finest properties. Opened in 1998, architect João Favila Menezes designed a unique boutique hotel, encapsulating a modern sense of elegance that blends in seamlessly with the wonderfully lush surrounding gardens.

The gardens are truly divine, and guests are continuously left smitten by days wandering verdant paths bursting with greenery. Dining is a pleasure at the hotel’s restaurant, set in a twentieth century building with a lavishly appointed dining room, while lunch and breakfast are served in the serene Garden Pavilion. Located just a ten minute drive from the old city of Funchal, there are plenty of reasons to get out and about, though lounging by heated outdoor pool, listening to the sound of nature, you may not feel like venturing very far at all.

Why Quinta da Casa Branca is so special...

City Highlights

Named after the Portuguese word for fennel (funcho) - the wild, yellow herb that cloaked the landscape when colonists first arrived five-hundred years ago - Funchal is a charming old town. Discover its twisting backwaters and fascinating museums; its atmospheric bars and restaurants selling local delights and sweet Madeira wine. There are hip and trendy spots, too, with spinning DJs and bartenders serving up top tunes and cocktails. Something not-to-miss is Funchal's market, housed in a huge Art Deco building. Feast your eyes on Funchal's architecture, then admire the masses of tropical flowers, piles of gleaming fish, colourful ceramics and ladies in traditional dress.

Romance

Quinta da Casa Branca is small, secluded and special; an award-winning boutique hotel very different from the tower-style properties on the coast. One of the pools is exclusively for adults, the dining is à la carte, there's a zen-like spa and a gorgeous choice of rooms. Best of all are the gardens, a botanical oasis overflowing with exotic trees and an explosion of colourful plants. Species like Giant Indian Rubber Trees, African Tulip Trees, Norfolk Pines, Pink Snowball, Caracas Big-Leaf, Mexican Breadfruit, Bamboo, Wisteria, Bougainvillaea and iconic Birds of Paradise, Madeira's national emblem. It's a setting that promises to spark romance.

Spa Breaks

The Phytocéane Spa at Quinta da Casa Branca was inspired by the tranquil surroundings of the property and, along with treatments, guests can enjoy the Jacuzzi, sauna, steam bath and relaxation room, or work out at the gym with a top of the range selection Technogym machines and equipment. There is also a tennis club nearby, a five minute drive away, which guests may use for a fee.

Outdoor Adventure

The island of Madeira is an outdoor playground of fun, thrills and adventure; activities range from orienteering and paragliding, to go-karting and geocaching. There are amazing rock formations for climbers, off-road trails for mountain bikers, waterfalls and ravines for canyoning, and mile upon mile of waymarked ‘levadas’ for exploring the island’s landscapes on foot - breath-taking views are guaranteed! Lovers of the sea will be spoilt for choice, too, with the likes of big game fishing, paddle boarding, surfing, diving and sightseeing boat trips. Seasonal wildlife watching excursions offer the chance to spot Pilot, Humpback and Beaked whales, as well as Atlantic Spotted, Bottlenose and Striped dolphins.

Outdoor Adventure
Beaches

A striking volcanic island, Madeira swaps golden beaches for a unique series of bathing platforms and black pebble-stone coves. Though beautiful, if you really love the sand, there are a couple of man-made beaches you can visit, thanks to imported sands: Calheta and Machico beaches are approximately 30km and 25km, respectively, from Funchal. Alternatively, plan a daytrip to the nearby island of Porto Santo, easily reached by flight or ferry and famed for its nine-kilometre scoop of blonde-streaked sands. This idyllic and impressive beachfront location is a favourite for swimming, surfing and strolling, with stunning cliffs and natural rock pools.

Beaches
Funchal

In the south of Madeira, the capital of Funchal is a modern, sophisticated city, filled with five-star hotels and top-class restaurants, some flaunting Michelin stars. The city also has an historic flavour, while the nightlife is bustling and lively. Setting-wise, the backdrop is spectacular – a magical blend of mountains, sea and botanical gardens filled with lush plant-life.

Golf

Madeira’s beautiful climate and staggering scenic backdrops make it a perfect setting for playing golf. Top-class courses include Santo da Serra, a cracking 27-hole course redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Senior, offering broad fairways, tight greens and a selection of tee positions. Similarly, Palheiro Golf is an 18-hole gem known for its fast greens and testing fairways, while Porto Santo Golf Course is also recommended, a welcome newcomer to the line-up. This par-72, 18-hole beauty sweeps across the island and was created by Spanish champion, Severiano Ballesteros. There is also a 9-hole ‘pitch and putt’ course here.

Families

Expect fantastic family entertainment on your luxury trip to Madeira. Highlights include Santa Cruz Aqua Park, boasting water slides, swimming pools and a lazy river, and Madeira Theme Park, featuring outdoor sports and attractions that mix entertainment with education and culture. Madeira also has a great mini-zoo called Quinta das Palmeiras, full of exotic birds. Meanwhile, museums include the colourful São Tiago Fort and Contemporary Art Museum of Funchal, the City Museum, and the Library Museum, showcasing an excellent Christopher Columbus collection. The Madeira Story Centre is also worth a visit, offering interactive features to retell the island’s history.

Families
Monte Village

This small village is situated in the hills overlooking Funchal and is famous for its thrilling toboggan rides, on which you can slide down narrow, winding streets on two-seater wicker sledges. These rides are only for the brave, as speeds of up to 48km/ph can be reached! For a more serene experience, Monte Village provides glorious views of Funchal and the coast – simply head up by cable-car and get set to gape.
