Located in the highlands of central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende enjoys a mild climate, with sunny cooler winters. The rainy season takes place during warmer summer months, with little rain between November to April and pleasant temperatures meaning this is the most popular time of year to visit.

Getting There

Fly from London Heathrow to Mexico City International (11 hours 55 minutes), followed by a flight to Queretaro Intercontinental Airport (1 hour 10 minutes). From here, a private car transfer takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to reach San Miguel de Allende.

Dating back to the 17th century, the eye-catching pink, towering spires of this parish church are an icon of San Miguel. A centrepiece in the towns many celebrations and festivals, the church is a must-see symbol of the roots and cultural heritage of this fascinating city. The remarkable façade was designed in the late 19th century by indigenous stonemason Zeferino Gutierrez, who based the design from postcards of French cathedrals, hence the feeling you have just stepped into a fairy-tale. For the most spectacular evening, during festivals elaborate fireworks explode around the towers- simply unmissable.

Jardin Botanico el Charco del Ingenio

Home to an exceptional range of biodiversity, the botanical gardens is also a vital wildlife and bird sanctuary in this region. Navigated by a huge network of cactus-lined pathways, El Charco is an essential haven of Mexico’s spectacular nature. The deep canyon nestled at the bottom holds the legendary freshwater spring the gardens are named after. Two-hour tours in English start at 10am every Tuesday and Thursday, alternatively this is a unique place for a leisurely stroll in an oasis of nature.

El Mirador Lookout

For the best views of the town and surrounding countryside, the walk up to this lookout is well worth it. Based on the south-west of San Miguel de Allende, the route to this viewpoint takes you through the picturesque Parque Benito Juarez, a real gem- with lush green ferns providing shade whilst you meander through the many pathways. From here, a short hike takes you up to the El Mirador Lookout, with the idyllic scenery the perfect reward. Alternatively, there are bus or taxi options to reach the viewpoint.

There is a rich and fascinating heritage in San Miguel, vital to Mexico today. There are a huge variety of ways to explore the vibrant history and culture here, with tours offered all over the city. A must-do is the Canada de la Virgen archaeological site, a pre-Hispanic ceremonial settlement made up of pyramid complexes and canyons- the sunset from here is stunning. The Museo Casa de Allende provides the opportunity to learn about the colonial past which established this city, and the vital role San Miguel played in Mexico’s independence. Across the year, celebrations and festivals take place to celebrate the lively artistic and music scene, so it’s worth checking out what’s on before you visit.

On the edge of an extinct volcano, subterranean volcanic activity around San Miguel has created many natural hot pools. Just 15 minutes from the city centre, La Gruta and La Escondida Hot Springs are a perfect way to spend an afternoon, relaxing in the natural wonder of thermal water caves, waterfalls created by the springs. Renowned for centuries for healing properties, experience at La Gruta the traditional healing ceremony in the ancient temazcal, leading out onto the lush gardens- an oasis of tranquillity.
