Luxury Holidays At Segera Retreat

The vision of Joachin Zeitz - founder of Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCCA) - Segera Retreat is a luxurious property in the heart of Laikipia, located between Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley. Offering truly unforgettable wildlife experiences, luxurious accommodation and incredible cuisine, Segera operates on a ‘4C’ policy of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce, creating a sustainable lifestyle for the area. A rustic safari-style lodge surrounded by golden savannah, Segera Retreat is enhanced with a range of luxurious facilities and amenities - including a serene wellness centre, exceptional art collection and outdoor cinema - making it the perfect base for your Kenya safari. With a farm-to-table approach to cuisine, Segera uses locally-sourced produce to support the area's farmers. Meals are served in a variety of venues - including picnics on the banks of the river, poolside or in the privacy of your villa. Segera’s Wine Tower is an architectural feature in its own right. Cooled by solar energy, it houses an excellent collection of African wines and French champagne and is also available for a private dining setting.

Hotel Experiences

One of the unique features of Segera Retreat is its sculpture garden and possession of Africa's largest private collection of artwork. An offspring of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, guests can experience the culture of Africa and its diaspora through the artwork on display, while there is also an artist-in-residence programme. More unforgettable experiences include visiting traditional local communities and flying over the conservation area by bi-plane, inspired by the Oscar-winning movie, 'Out of Africa'.

Safari

Located at the heart of Kenya's striking Laikipia County, a safari from Segera offer guests the chance to see a range of spectacular wildlife - including elephants, big cats, giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and African wild dog. Laikipia is an important conservation area for the protection of wildlife. Working with local farmers, cattle grazing is managed to avoid conflict with the movement of wild animals and thus protecting some of its endangered species.

Climate

In Laikipia, the altitude varies dramatically and temperatures fall by about 6.5°C for every 1,000m you climb. As a result, climatic variations exist within the region. Due to its proximity to the equator, temperatures do not vary much around the year. Daytime temperatures hover around the mid to high twenties, while nights and early mornings can be notably cooler. Two wet seasons occur per year - the 'Short Rains' fall between October and November, while the 'Long Rains' occur between March and May. April is the wettest month. June to September are considered the dry months, characterised by mostly sunny days and cold night time temperatures.

Getting There

Each of the reserves in Laikipia County feature airstrips, allowing for scheduled or private charter flights from Nairobi and other Kenyan regions. The parks can also be reached by road. Your Luxury Travel Specialist will advise the best way to reach the park, depending on where you visit on your bespoke journey of Kenya.

Wildlife Encounters

As well as visiting the rhino and chimpanzee projects, you can join expert trackers on morning, afternoon and evening game drives to go in search of elephant, leopard, cheetah, lion, black-backed jackal, spotted hyena and African wild dogs. Ol Pejeta is a bird-watcher's paradise with some 500 species recorded - including the migrant species from Europe and North Africa that visit the area from November to April.

Wildlife Encounters
Tracking Lions

Lions are becoming more vulnerable here, and you can learn more about the importance of protecting them by joining the Ol Pejeta researchers. Using specialist equipment, the collared lions are tracked, monitored and the data sent to the Ecological Department. Learn how to identify each individual by their whisker patterns, as well as uncovering how old they are by the colour of their nose. The data gathered is vital to protect them for future generations.

Tracking Lions
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Established by the Jane Goodall Institute and the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides a safe haven for orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees. Their natural large enclosure gives them a chance to socialise and interact as they are nursed back to health after their traumatic past. You can meet some of the 39 occupants, watch them feed and learn about this ultra-important conservation project.
