Luxury Holidays At Ol Donyo Lodge

Ol Donyo Lodge is a welcoming luxury camp nestled within the heart of the beautiful Chyulu Hills National Park in south-eastern Kenya. A member of Relais & Chateaux and National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, Ol Donyo Lodge is part of a 275,000-acre ranch, owned by the Maasai and leased by Great Plains Conservation. Delicious, homecooked and locally-inspired meals are served in the dining room or out in the bush, accompanied by the sounds and sights of the surrounding nature.
Against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, safaris are conducted in open four-wheel drive game vehicles, on foot, by horseback or mountain bike. Due to the partnership with the Maasai and the emphasis on conservation here, the area is gloriously biodiverse. As well as giraffe, zebra, lion and leopard, the region is known for some of the largest elephants in Africa

Climate

Chyulu Hills National Park experiences two rainy seasons: the Long Rains in March and April, as well as the short rains in November and December. Though it can be visited year-round, the wildlife viewing is generally best in the drier months from June to October and January to February. This is due to animals congregating around permanent water sources, making them easier to track down. The temperature generally remains between 20 - 30°C throughout the year.

Getting There

British Airways fly direct from London Heathrow to Nairobi in around 8 hours, 25 minutes. The park is approximately 3 hours 40 minutes by road from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, while Chyulu Hills also houses two airstrips for charter planes.

Wildlife Encounters

The verdant terrain of Chyulu Hills National Park houses a variety of incredible Kenyan wildlife - including elephant, lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe and reedbuck. The volcanic landscape also features naturally wooded areas which are home to around 250 species of birdlife - paradise for bird watchers!

Wildlife Encounters
Cultural Encounters

Learn more about the fascinating culture of the Maasai and how they have evolved to protect their habitat and the local wildlife. Lion hunting is a rite of passage to the Maasai but with rapidly declining lion numbers, the Maasai warriors of this area instead show their athletic skills, strength and prowess in the biennial Maasai Olympics.

Cultural Encounters
Mountain Biking

Chyulu Hills' ancient volcano peaks offer some challenging, though spectacularly scenic, cycling trails. There are wonderful lookout points along the way, as well as plenty of chance for wildlife encounters!

Mountain Biking
Horse Riding

Search for wildlife on horseback, with an unforgettable ride through the dramatic landscape of Chyulu Hills. Rides are adapted to your level of experience, so you can enjoy a horse trek no matter whether a beginner or total pro! Far quieter than a vehicle safari, you can often get very close to the animals.
