Climate

Stunning Sumba island has a semi-arid climate and, the east of the island in particular, is characterised by hot North-Australian weather. From May to October, the climate is mostly dry and the temperatures are high, particularly before the rain begins in November; this monsoon season can last for up to 5 months in the west of Sumba and 3 months in the east. April to July is the best time to visit for nature lovers as the island is at its lushest after the rain, whilst surfers flock from around the world to experience the awesome waves from May to September.

Getting There

Please contact our Travel Consultants for flight details.

Watersports

A site of pilgrimage for lovers of surfing, Sumba Island boasts a spectacular, extensive coastline, as well as housing one of the world's most coveted waves, 'God's Left' (or 'Occy's Left', named after the Australian surfer, Mark Occhilupo), which offers even the most experienced surfers a real challenge. The crystalline waters and pristine reefs offer some of the best scuba diving, free diving and snorkelling in Indonesia, allowing you to explore the mesmerising, colourful underwater kingdom of Sumba, and encounter its diverse inhabitants.

Culture

Immerse yourself in a forgotten culture and take a trip back in time, as you explore Sumba Island’s enchanting historical sites and encounter the wonderfully fascinating residents. Hike through rice paddies and low limestone hills, past the picturesque, traditional hilltop villages, marvelling at the thatched clan houses clustered around megalithic tombs. Live like a local at one of the bustling markets, before spotting Sumba’s beautiful, world-famous Ikat weavings; each region in Sumba has its own distinctive design, all reflecting the life, culture and history of this astonishing island.

Beaches

Offering a true taste of tropical paradise, Sumba Island’s beautiful beaches are characterised by sugar-soft, white sand that leads out to the shimmering turquoise, and inimitably clear, waters of the Indian Ocean. Whilst lying back beneath the island sunshine is one (wonderful) way to enjoy the stunning coastline, why not embark on an unforgettable horse ride in the shallows? The Sandalwood Stables boast world-class equestrian facilities and even have a resident Horse Whisperer!
