Luxury Holidays At Skálakot

Located amid the stunning setting of rural southern Iceland, Skálakot is a sumptuously stylish boutique hotel that offers a unique opportunity for adventures in the ‘land of fire and ice’. Comprising just fourteen art-deco inspired rooms, this luxurious hotel has been owned by the same family for seven generations and prides itself on warm and personal hospitality. It is set on the family’s private farm, which breeds its own stables of friendly Icelandic horses, who can take guests out on guided tours of the stunning landscape. There is also a fine dining restaurant for guests to enjoy, which serves seasonal specialities and homegrown vegetables from breakfast through to dinner, plus outdoor steam baths and hot tubs for relaxing under the stars after a day of adventure. With glaciers, mountains and volcanoes all nearby, this is an ideal spot for exploring the wonders of Iceland.

Adventure

Skálakot is perfectly placed for making the most of an Icelandic adventure. In the southern region of the country, you will be located within an easy distance from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier where you can go snowmobiling in a stunning setting. The hotel is based on the family’s own private farm, where gentle Icelandic-bred horses can take guests out on a scenic ride, along with dedicated guides and horse trainers, regardless of your ability. You can also discover the Fjallabak Nature Reserve with a bumby Jeep tour or hike the Sólheimajökull glacier to see more of the breathtaking landscapes.

Lakes & Mountains

Surrounded by outstanding natural beauty, it is essential you venture out to see the surrounding mountains of Southern Iceland. There are plenty of hiking trails around Skálakot that will take you up above the farm to admire the magnificent views, while fitness fans can even take a jogging route. You may also wish to experience the geothermal swimming pools, set outdoors and surrounded by the ruggedly beautiful hills. To learn how people used to live in this environment, you can visit the Skógar Folk Museum, where you can see the tools, turf houses and artwork that came from inhabitants centuries ago.

Beautiful Waterfalls

South-Iceland is blessed with a number of stunning waterfalls. The 60-metre-high Seljalandsfoss falls is one of the best-known in Iceland, flowing from the famous Eyjafjallajokull glacier. A footpath leads you behind the falls so if you’re not afraid to get a little wet, you can walk through to the other side. Another spectacular sight is the Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks located along the black sands of the Reynisfjara beach below, where waves of the North Atlantic spectacularly break. Another highlight just 30 kilometres away is Skogarfoss, one of Iceland‘s biggest and most beautiful waterfalls that tumbles over a cliff, marking the country's former coastline.

Beautiful Waterfalls
Horseback Riding

The Icelandic Horse is a unique breed and a national treasure, descending from the horses of the first settlers imported from Norway in the 9th century. As they are known for their intelligence and friendly character, horse-riding tours for all abilities are highly recommended, allowing you to connect with these fascinating creatures as you explore the stunning scenery of moss-covered lava fields and soft black lava sand on the beach.

Horseback Riding
Westman Islands

Take a private boat to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), an archipelago of 15 islands off Iceland’s South coast. Explore the only inhabited island of Heimaey, to witness the largest puffin colony in the world, walk around lava fields and hike along beautiful trails some 900 foot above sea-level, offering incredible vistas. Other activities include boat tours around the islands, passing in and out of caves along the way, visiting the Eldheimar museum to learn more about the 1973 volcanic eruption, and Sæheimar Natural History Museum and Aquarium, full of information about the island’s native birds.
