Thailand's legacy of wellness stretches back centuries, deeply rooted in the ancient Indian system of Ayurveda. Ayurveda, meaning "science of life," emphasises a holistic approach to balancing the mind, body, and spirit.
The Ayurvedic principles led to Thai wellness practices using pressure points, stretches and herbal compresses to promote relaxation and improve circulation, and many modern treatments incorporate this still.
Over time, Thailand has fused these traditions with modern medical practices to crown the country as a cornerstone of wellbeing innovations.
Thailand's Wellness Excursions
Snorkel and Kayak in Ang Thong
Spend a day cruising around the islands of Ang Thong National Park in the Gulf of Thailand. A luxury speedboat will cast you off into the tropical waters, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the dramatic limestone from the sea. Stop near Koh Wao island for a chance to swim in the clear waters and see colourful marine life, before a guided kayaking tour of Koh Pha Luay's marine park.
An Afternoon of Spiritual Exploration
Practice meditation alongside a guide at Wat Suan Dok. Tour the temple, learning about the history of one of Chiang Mai's most sacred sites. Then, amid this sanctuary, learn traditional meditation techniques from a local expert. Spend time practicing meditation, before meeting with one of Wat Suan Dok's monks to learn about his life, the country's spiritual beliefs and anything else of interest.
Hike The Doi Inthanon Waterfalls
Venture away from Chiang Mai's city buzz with a trek through Thailand's north. Begin with a hike to a Karen hilltribe village for an insight into their unique culture and high-quality coffee bean plantation. As you go deeper into the lush forest, keep an eye out for wildlife like gibbons, deer and wild boar! Concluding your hike is the Wachiratharn Waterfall, where you'll encounter 70 metres of crashing water.
Visit The Emerald Pool and Jungle Spa
Explore one of Thailand's last remaining rainforests on a Krabi day trip. Accompanied by birdsong, you'll walk through the forest until you reach Sra Morakot, a spectacular crystal-clear lagoon. You can also visit a collection of curative natural Jacuzzis hidden by thick tropical plants, and a nearby jungle pavilion for a unique head and shoulder massage.
"Wellness is not just for the weary, but for anyone aspiring towards vibrant health, personal growth and wellbeing..."
Meet Karina Stewart, Founder and Chief Wellness Officer of Kamalaya Koh Samui, Thailand's multi-award-winning Wellness Sanctuary.
Wellness and wellbeing are embedded into Thailand's history, but what's your story? How did you find yourself coming into this line of work?
KS
My upbringing played a significant role in shaping my path towards holistic healing and self-discovery. My mother's health crisis and deep interest in natural healing, meditation, yoga and Asian spiritual philosophies ignited my curiosity.
Fate and my pursuit of meditation and spiritual philosophy brought me together with John Stewart in 1982 while we were both visiting and studying in a remote Himalayan ashram in India, guided by a revered Himalayan yogi master known as Herakhan Baba. Inspired by our teacher and our time in the Himalayas, and through our shared values and aspirations, John and I brought to life the Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary. Kamalaya is the embodiment of our respective life journeys and unwavering commitment to serving others and making positive contributions to the world.
What is your favourite treatment, and who would you recommend it to?
KS
We have over 70 therapies and treatments at Kamalaya and it's very hard to choose just one. A favourite programme though is our Comprehensive Detox, designed for anyone seeking to reset their body and mind, create new habits, reduce systemic inflammation, enhance the natural detoxification processes and improve overall wellbeing. It is a great reset and renewal.
How is the essence of Thailand brought into your treatments?
KS
The essence of Thailand is interwoven into every aspect of our retreat, particularly through our treatments rooted in Traditional Thai Medicine. They encapsulate the holistic wellness philosophy of Thailand, always creating a harmony of body, mind and spirit. Beyond our therapies and treatments, our cuisine blends traditional flavours and ingredients with nutritional wellness, and we regularly invite Thai Buddhist monks during auspicious days to offer prayers and chants.
As someone who works in wellness, how do you start your day?
KS
Starting the day on the right note is crucial for me. I begin with a gentle hot tea which serves as my moment of 'me time'. This quiet, solitary ritual allows me to become quietly present and reflect while setting intentions for the day ahead, grounding me in mindfulness and purpose. It is followed by breathing meditation and/or chanting practices.
What makes Thailand so special for a wellness holiday?
KS
The country offers an abundance of serene locations, from tranquil beaches to lush mountains, providing the perfect backdrop for rejuvenation and peace. The warmth of the Thai people, coupled with the country's commitment to wellness, makes Thailand an exceptional destination for those seeking a transformative wellness journey amidst natural splendour.
In your opinion, what's one simple thing we can do for our health?
KS
One simple yet profound thing we can do for our health is to incorporate daily breathing and mindfulness practice into our daily routine. It's a foundational step that supports every aspect of our wellbeing. They help us become more aware of our present moment, reducing stress and enhancing our overall wellbeing. Even dedicating just a few minutes each day to this can significantly impact our mental, emotional and physical health.
