Many people will think of a weekend European break and expect sea views or a city setting, but instead this weekend came with stunning views across the gardens and infinity pool to the medieval hilltop village Pays de Fayence.
The villas and bungalows meander through the gardens and I was shown to my spacious suite. The décor was in keeping with its provincial setting: a tiled terracotta floor, rustic colours, and a large terrace with sun loungers. Here, a nice bottle of Whispering Angel Rose was waiting for me. Château d'Esclans Country House and Vineyard, where it is produced, is 30 minutes away so you can organise a tour and tasting. With everything else I had planned for this weekend though, I settled for a glass of vino with a view.
Set apart from the main hotel is a large two-storey spa, voted one of Europe's best with a 20m indoor pool that looks like a Roman bath. Since this was a weekend of slowing down and relaxing, I treated myself to a facial, and it was the most amazing treatment. The spa uses Kos Paris products, and after such indulgence (and an early morning flight) the lovely therapist ended up having to wake me up!
Since the hotel has two 18-hole golf courses, I spent the following morning practising my swing at the practice range. Though I won't be taking up golf in the future, I can see why golfers love it here. It was good fun, and the views were great.
Lunch was at a nearby family-owned vineyard, Chateau des Selves, where as well as making wine, they also make their own olive oil. After a tasting of cheese and wine pairings, we took a walk through the vineyard which was definitely needed after all the cheese I ate!
The afternoon was spent by the beautiful pool, and then in the evening we ate at the Michelin-star La Faventia and had their amazing tasting menu.
Our final morning had to be one of the best experiences I have ever done. Despite Grasse, an 11th-century medieval town famous for its perfume industry, being near the hotel, I wasn't able to make a visit during the weekend. I was not left disappointed though - we were able to make our own perfume at the hotel!
It was so interesting learning how to blend the essential oils and choosing the right base: earthy, fruity, floral, citrus. My own concoction - though no Chanel N°5 - was definitely wearable and maybe a sideline!
It was then time to say goodbye to Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort, or at least until I can return again.
