How to Spend 48 Hours in New York

You're heading to the Big Apple, the bustling metropolis on the east coast and home to possibly the best bagels on the planet, but you've only got 48 hours, so what do you do?

New York is a city that never sleeps, so planning your itinerary can be a somewhat daunting task, but in this guide, we will offer our recommendations on some of the activities, attractions, locations and food we think you should be trying and visiting when you're in the city. From the 9/11 Memorial, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty to walking across Brooklyn Bridge and enjoying a slice of NYC pizza, this article covers it all, so keep reading.

Day 1

Morning - See the Statue of Liberty up close

Statue of Liberty
Statue of Liberty
Situated on Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886 and has been an icon of freedom and a symbol of welcome to immigrants ever since. A short boat ride will take you to the iconic statue, which stands proudly on the island with a torch held high. Not only will an exciting boat ride allow you to see the statue personally, but it'll also offer stunning views of New York from the water. If you're a lover of history, then we highly recommend you pair the visit with one to Ellis Island and visit the National Museum of Immigration to learn more about New York's history and Lady Liberty's purpose.

Lunchtime - Enjoy a brilliant bagel

New York is famous for its food, from larger-than-large coffees to cheese-topped pizza slices, pretzels and, of course, New York Cheesecake, but we don't think a trip is complete without a great New York bagel! Quite the competition is taking place to determine the best place to enjoy a bagel, but we think that no matter where you go, you should spend your first lunchtime in the Big Apple enjoying a freshly baked bagel, filled to perfection.

Afternoon - Meander around Central Park

Central Park New York

Evening - Enjoy the view from the Top of the Rock and Summit One Vanderbilt

Covering 843 acres, Central Park is bigger than Monaco in size and is not only a wonderful green but also outdoor space to enjoy; it is filled with wonderful food outlets, picnic areas and local markets. When visiting Central Park, look out for famous filming locations, including those from films like Home Alone 2, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Stuart Little and Night at the Museum, to name just a few. If you want to spend longer in the area, you can always head to popular attractions like Central Park Zoo, Bow Bridge, Belvedere Castle and Bethesda Terrace. When you're in New York, Central Park is a real must.
New York at night
New York at Night
You can't leave New York without witnessing its incredible beauty at night. We don't think there are many better places to see the raw beauty and expanse of New York than the Rockefeller Building. Many people opt for the Empire State Building for a bird's-eye view of the city, but those in the know go to the Rock as they know they'll be able to enjoy the Empire State within their view when they reach the top! But for something completely different and to experience one of the newest viewing experience in New York, head to Summit One Vanderbilt. Towering over 1,000 feet above Midtown, this unique and memorable experience gives you a fresh perspective of the Big Apple with floor-to-ceiling views over the skyline and reflective walls that create totally unique instagramable moments in this iconic city.

Day 2

Morning - Visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum

New York 9/11 Memorial
New York 9/11 Memorial
One of the most iconic landmarks and memorials in New York is the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. A location that millions visit every year to pay their respects, we think all those staying the city should spend time here, and those who want to learn more should take time to take in the Memorial Museum in full. There are large water features which now sit on the exact location where the two towers once stood, and the gentle trickle of the water is a peaceful commemoration of those who lost their lives in the attack. The Museum is next to the site and is filled with information and stories of that fateful event.

Lunchtime - Tuck into a slice of tasty NYC pizza

Pizza
Pizza
Find a more local way to enjoy a lunchtime in the Big Apple than with a massive slice of New York pizza! New York is renowned for its amazing pizza, with slices that are large and wide with a thin crust that is foldable yet crispy, and you'll find an establishment selling this delightful treat on almost every block. Some of the best places to grab a slice include Di Fara Pizza, Lucali, Joe's Pizza, Scarr's Pizza and Roberta's to name just a few.

Afternoon - Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is an iconic landmark that crosses the East River in New York and joins the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. An afternoon walk across this feat of engineering is essential and should be enjoyed by all who are visiting the city. Enjoy the stunning views as you head over the bridge and marvel at the high-rise buildings that line the waterfront on either side. For those looking to enjoy real New York, seeing the city from both sides of the water is a must.

Evening - Explore Brooklyn

Once you've crossed the bridge and stopped to admire the wonderful views from the bridge, then we recommend you spend your evening exploring artistic Brooklyn and all it has to offer. Brooklyn is definitely worth discovering as it is home to some of the most quintessential attractions in the city, including Coney Island and Prospect Park, and also some of the best pizza locations in the whole of New York. For something special, head to 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge for expansive views over this iconic borough's skyline and take in the picturesque waterfront as you sip on innovative cocktails and enjoy eclectic Asian-inspired light bites at Harriet's Rooftop bar. What a way to end an amazing trip in this iconic city!
