"Would you like to see the view before we go inside?", asked our welcoming receptionist as we stepped out of our car and handed the keys over to the concierge. And what a view to gaze down upon - a spectacular deep cove with rows of straw parasols on a sandy beach nestled at its heart, with discreet accommodation spread along its edges, many with private pools. We could not wait to explore and take that first dip in the stunning blue sea below! Built into the cove's natural shape on five levels, silent funiculars glided between the beach, bars and restaurants, and electric golf carts carried us between the main hub and the rooms spread around the bay. The staff were also faultless while remaining relaxed and friendy. No request was too big and there were smiles all round. With six restaurants and bars, an infinity pool, spa, kids' club and the sandy beach with its deliciously turquoise-blue sea, Daios Cove was truly the perfect option for the whole family.
I could hardly drag my six-year-old daughter away from the incredible kids' club, which is complimentary for little ones up to 12 years old. The staff here were so friendly and great with the kids, while there was also a garden with toys, plenty of new friends for her to play with and a number of structured activities - including treasure hunts around the hotel and locally inspired crafts. Her other highlights were the (COVID-safe) buffet at Pangea, where she could choose what she wanted (desserts - always!), as well as swimming both in the warm clear blue sea and the gorgeous infinity pool.
For us, it's all about the simple things, and we really loved the stunning view from our room. There was nothing better than relaxing on our private balcony at night with a bottle of wine, once our daughter had gone to sleep -although a babysitting service is also available! We're also real foodies, with dining a huge part of any trip we take. Daios didn't disappoint in this department either and the sophisticated Ocean Restaurant was a particular favourite of ours, celebrating Greek produce from land and sea, with a creative flair. Meanwhile, after a morning on the beach, the fresh food from the Beach House was just what the doctor ordered... the Club Sandwiches here are insane and absolutely huge!
Of course, I was a little weary about travelling during this time, but the moment I arrived at Daios Cove, these worries melted away. Social distancing was respected by all and protocols were not imposing, they felt more like light touches that really made a difference - from sanitisers displayed in all key areas, including the funiculars and lifts, a glass-screened buffet where you were served efficiently, discreet temperature checks and digital menus. It was a great step into the "new normal" and something we will be happy to do again.
