The Cook Islands, named after the British explorer, Captain James Cook who discovered them in the 1770s, lie scattered over a million square miles of ocean in the  South Pacific. So remote are they that the captain recorded them in his log as, "the most detached parts of the earth”.

Smaller than Tahiti in neighbouring French Polynesia, Raratonga, the capital island, complete with beaches dusted with sand as white as washing powder and a dramatic mountainous interior, is none the less imposing and unremittingly beautiful.
